From the Hill Country Harmonica Homecoming -
"Like his one-of-a-kind, two-beat monicker, Deak Harp is a mystery man who has made a unique space for himself in the world of blues harmonica. Although he hails these days from south-central Illinois—“the land of Lincoln”—his roots go back to the East Coast, where he started blowing harp at the age of 12. An early flirtation with British blues gave way to a fascination with the raw, powerful stylings of James Cotton. In true old-school fashion, Deak didn’t just listen to Cotton’s recordings: he followed him to gigs, became a friend and apprentice, and ended up driving Cotton’s tour van for a while during the early 1990s

That seat-of-the-pants blues education—which put Deak shoulder to shoulder with Luther Tucker, Little Walter’s former guitar-man—is what sets him apart from the rest. He’s got that raw, rich, rip-out-the-guts sound. The relaxed confidence that knows how to groove. You can’t buy that, or steal it, or fake it. You’ve got to earn it. Deak not only earned it, but he’s expanded on it. Over the past several years he has transformed himself into a one-man harmonica-powered blues band—thumping on an amplified wine-box with one foot, kicking a snare with the other. He’s become a familiar sight at blues festivals in Mississippi and Arkansas, busking the streets, drawing a crowd. He’s a pioneer, reinventing an old country-juke sound for the 21st century.
Deak Harp recently joined the Kilborn Alley Blues Band and is giving the world a chance to experience his full-spectrum mastery of the blues harmonica. He’s a wonderful teacher of the instrument, too. At Hill Country Harmonica, he’ll be sharing his insights about everything from tongue-blocking techniques to essential blues grooves"
